( Nov 13, 1996.) At Varsity Arena, writer Peter Nowak and myself were going to cover Soundgarden’s ‘Down on the Upside’ tour for our campus paper. Peter was a huge fan and his words of praise to the band didn’t disappoint. As Chris Cornell took the stage the place went wild, and there was an almost tangible magnetic energy in the arena that I’ve never come to experience at any other concert since. It was a transforming experience, I was hooked and turned me into an immediate fan of the band. This photograph was in my early portfolio for years. He would cross my lens a couple more times, when he came to Toronto for the Toronto International Film Festival with his family at his side. Saddened at the news today, and my heart goes out to his family and friends.
